Almost one third of the Estonian population (approx. 400,000) lives in the capital. For this reason, Tallinn (formerly Reval), situated at the Gulf of Finland may be considered a metropolis even by the European standards. It is one of the best retained medieval European towns, with its web of winding cobblestone streets and properties, from the 11th to 15th centuries, preserved nearly in their entirety. On one hand, Tallinn gives a good feeling of modern quality of life and of respect for traditions on the other.
